Anwar may meet Nik Aziz tomorrow

The meeting is to seek an explanation on Anwar’s statement on Israel.

(Free Malaysia Today) – Kelantan Menteri Besar and PAS spiritual leader Nik Aziz Nik Mat will most likely meet PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim tomorrow to discuss the latter’s comments on Israel in the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

“Anwar may meet Nik Aziz today but then there is the Conference of Rulers today. So he (Nik Aziz) will most likely be occupied with the conference,” PAS information chief, Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said.

“I think they will meet tomorrow morning,” he said.

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang in his blog posting also asked Anwar to clarify his statement.

Responding over the matter, PAS vice president Mahfuz Omar today went out of his way to defend Anwar’s statement.

When asked about the developments of the meeting today at party headquarters, the Pokok Sena MP said,

“Anwar’s comments did not recognise Israel. What he said was that if Israel were to recognise Palestine, then Israel should be recognised as well,

“It doesn’t mean that he recognises Israel now. Anwar said when it happens, then Israel will be given security guarantee but that is not what is happening currently,” he explained to reporters.

Anwar has said that he would meet Nik Aziz in person to discuss the matter.

He said Nik Aziz’s demand for a retraction was a “polite, soft advice” and made in a friendly manner.

Meanwhile, PAS vice-president Mahfuz Omar today defended Anwar’s statement.
