Anti-apostasy gathering draws 6,000 in T’ganu

(Bernama) – The fifth in the series of the ‘Himpunan Sejuta Umat’ (Gathering of a Million Muslims) to defend the faith against threats of apostasy saw 6,000 people gather at the stadium here today.

Similar gatherings have been held previously in Kepala Batas (Penang), Paroi (Negeri Sembilan), Kuala Kangsar (Perak) and Shah Alam (Selangor).

Today’s gathering was organised by the Islamic non-governmental organisation Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) to highlight the issue of apostasy, said Isma secretary-general Aminuddin Yahaya.

He said the application by Muslims to convert to other religions numbered 868 cases nationwide over the last five years and should be contained by the government and Islamic NGOs.

Aminuddin said the gathering has come up with 10 resolutions which would be presented to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for the formulation of laws to check apostasy.
