PAS internal strife spills over to Kedah

PAS’ internal problem is about a clash of ages. The old are not willing to give in while the young are getting restless.

(Free Malaysia Today) – PAS has a major problem. The seasoned politicians are not willing to give an inch while the young politicians want a change in how the party is run.

This difference has spilled over to Kedah. The young intellectuals have been plotting the overthrow of the fundamentalists led by Kedah Menteri Besar Azizan Abdul Razak.

And this does not auger well for PAS, as Kedah is considered the second bastion of the party after Kelantan.

The embattled menteri besar has the backing of fundamentalist president Abdul Hadi Awang.

Together with him are PAS secretary-general Mustafa Ali and deputy ulamak head Mutalib Embong and a few others who escaped the “flushing out” of veteran fundamentalists by the young liberals at the party’s election last year.

Azizan’s “buddy-buddy” relationship with several Umno leaders in the state and the good relationship with the Sultan have not be viewed as “positive” by the young liberals .

Before the latest issues of the demolition of Madrashah Saliniah and suspension of Kolej Universiti Insaniah (KUIN) students, attempts were made to force him to step down after he underwent a heart surgery.

But Azizan managed to thwart the attempts with the support of Abdul Hadi who is still backing him in the present situation.

Given the mandate to solve the present situation in the state by Abdul Hadi, Azizan is now moving fast to stamp out the dissidents.

PAS losing its grip

Unlike the Selangor case where PAS state chief Hasan Ali was referred to the party supreme council for action, Azizan could not do such thing for Kedah as the liberals dominate the council at federal level.

A Kedah PAS member said: “The case here is not simple as in Hasan’s case.”
