PM says no one to escape punishment if found guilty of graft

(TMI) – Datuk Seri Najib Razak today reiterated his administration’s commitment to combat corruption, saying that action would even be taken against people within the government if found guilty.

“It depends on what was done wrong. The importance is for a fair process, the punishment should be proportionate.

“If they did wrong, nothing I can do; they have to face the music,” Najib (picture) told Chinese-language radio station 988FM in an interview this morning.

The prime minister was asked by radio hosts Sam Mak and Tan Yi Hui on whether he would take any action against “subordinates” or “close counterparts” who were found guilty of corruption.

Najib stressed that the government has done a lot to fight corruption such as educating the public on the matter.

But he also urged the private sector to play a bigger role in tackling graft, saying “it would be better” if more help came from them.

The Najib administration’s efforts to fight corruption have been marred by repeated allegations of corruption concerning key individuals within the government, most notably the controversy surrounding the National Feedlot Centre (NFC).
