Don’t pressure EC – Nazri

(Bernama) — The Election Commission (EC) should not be pressured but instead be given space and time to go through all the recommendations made by the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) on Electoral Reform before a final decision is made, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Mohamed Seri Nazri Aziz.

As such, he reminded all quarters including the opposition not to pressure the EC and the government to implement the recommendations before the next general election.

“It has only been two days since the Dewan Rakyat passed the recommendations made by the PSC. I urge everyone to be patient, I am sure the EC will implement without delay the recommendations it can,” he said when replying to a question from Dr Tan Seng Giaw (DAP-Kepong) in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Dr Tan Seng Giaw (DAP-Kepong) had asked what was the feedback from the EC on the recommendations when Mohamed Nazri was winding up debate on the Supply Bill 2011 for his ministry.

He also said MPs would also be given an opportunity to address electoral issues with the chairman and deputy chairman of the EC on April 16.

The opposition was unhappy that the recommendations by the PSC were passed by the Dewan without including a minority report that opposition members in the committee had wanted to include.
