Eight NGOs join Bersih rally in Miri


Some 200 protesters are expected to join the Bersih 3.0 Miri sit-in rally on April 28.

(FMT) — Eight non-governmental organisations (NGOs) will be taking part in a rally in Miri on April 28, 2012 in conjunction with the Bersih 3.0 rally in Kuala Lumpur and simultaneously nationwide.

A Miri Bersih 3.0 committee has been formed to coordinate activities in conjunction with the massive rally to be held in Kuala Lumpur. Environment group Himpunan Hijau will also be holding its rally together with Bersih.

Mark Bujang, chairman of the Miri Bersih 3.0 committee said that they are inviting members of the public who are concerned about the electoral process in this country and also the state of the environment particularly in Miri to join the sit-in rally.

Said Bujang; “Our committee is coordinating with the national body in Kuala Lumpur to bring the message to the people in Miri that the government needs to listen to the grouses of the people and meet the eight demands being put forward by Bersih on electoral reforms and good governance.

“Our committee will also put forward issues of concern to the government especially the state government with regards to the planned 12 dams, industrial or plantation activities within water catchment areas, native customary rights land and dirty heavy industries within the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (Score) project.

“Flyers will be distributed to the public prior to the event,” he said.

The eight participating NGOs are Borneo Resources Institute Malaysia (BRIMAS), Jaringan Tanah Hak Adat Bangsa Asal Sarawak (TAHABAS), Indigenous Peoples Institute, Malaysia (IPIMAS), Persatuan Wanita Desa Sarawak (WADESA), Anak Muda Sarawak (AMS), Save Sarawak’s Rivers

Network (SAVE Rivers), Baram Protection Action Committee (BPAC) and Sarawak Indigenous Lawyers Alliance (SILA).

Bujang said that some 200 from these NGOs are expected to turn up for the sit-in rally.

It is understood that political parties like PKR, DAP and PAS in Miri will be joining the rally.

In Kuching and in other major towns in the state, opposition parties and NGOs are also planning to organise a similar rally.
