Mat Sabu: Government and Pakatan should be led by Malays

(Malaysian Digest) – PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu said the Government and Pakatan Rakyat will continue to be led by the dominant race that is the Malays.

Speaking to The Mole, Mohamad Sabu or better known as Mat Sabu said: “I believe a leader will be chosen from the dominant race and it is a fact that the Malays are the majority of the people in this country.”

“So in the government’s composition we need to get a Malay leader to represent the majority,” Mat Sabu added.

Asked whether the opposition’s coalition will continue with the same policy, Mat Sabu said: “Of course. Having a Malay leader will be our common stand.”

He was commenting on the statement made by DAP’s vice national chairman Dr Tan Seng Giaw who said the Malay leadership of Pakatan Rakyat is not a permanent arrangement as the leader of the Opposition pact could come from any race.

Mat Sabu further added: “Unless in the future the majority of Malaysians are no longer Malays. Otherwise, I do not see why we need to change it.”

He further said in the Pakatan coalition itself, Malay leaders are the majority as compared to the non-Malay leaders.

“There are higher number of seats won by Malay leaders from PKR and Pas than those from DAP. So people should not be worried of Umno and Barisan Nasional’s tactics of saying the Malays will lose power if they voted Pakatan in, in the next general election,” Mat Sabu added.

Using Penang as example, Mat Sabu said the state is led by a non-Malay (chief minister Lim Guan Eng) and this was due to the fact that the majority of the seats were won by Chinese from DAP.

Yesterday Dr Tan said while the DAP currently accepts Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the Pakatan leader it doesn’t mean the position was exclusive to the Malays.

He was commenting on Anwar’s statement in an interview with Asia360 where Anwar said that the race-card will not be an issue if the opposition forms the Federal Government

However Johor PKR chairman Datuk Chua Jui Meng said it is only logical for any ruling coalition to be led by a Malay as only a Malay could be appointed as the Prime Minister.

“Of course any coalition will be Malay-led. We are being realistic here. I would like to think that is what Anwar meant by the opposition being Malay-led.”
