RM1.5bil to resolve water woes


(The Star) – The Federal Govern­ment has pumped huge sums of money in Kelantan to resolve the water woes faced by consumers.

“Some RM1.5bil was spent to upgrade water treatment facilities in the state over the past 12 years”, said International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed.

He said the Rural and Regional Development Ministry had allocated RM265mil to improve the supply of clean water and RM81.5mil to upgrade treatment plants.

He said under the water supply and environmental and sanitation programme (Bakas), RM53.4mil was given to the state while the South Kelantan Develop­ment Autho­rity (Kesedar) spent RM36.2mil to improve water prob­lems.

“Interest-free soft loans amounting to RM597.8mil were given to state water agency Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd (AKSB) and co-monitored by the Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry.

“The East Coast Economic Region (ECER) allocated RM22mil to upgrade treatment plants and the Prime Minister’s Department contributed RM2.2mil,” he said.
