DAP slammed for being silent
(The Star) – The DAP has been criticised for remaining silent while PAS continues to insist that hudud laws will be implemented if Pakatan Rakyat takes over the Federal Government.
“It is sad that both PKR and DAP are willing to sacrifice the rights of non-Muslims, which they have been entrusted to look after, by keeping quiet and turning a blind eye to PAS’ Islamisation in their state governments,” MCA Youth secretary-general Datuk Chai Kim Sen said in a statement yesterday.
He said DAP leaders, as elected representatives, were neglecting their duties by not speaking up against the invasion of non-Muslim rights.
Chai was referring to a recent press report quoting PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang as saying that if the Opposition coalition took over the Government, it would amend the Constitution to remove Islam as the country’s official religion and stipulate it as addin (a way of life).
He said DAP national chairman Karpal Singh was the only one speaking up on the issue while other leaders, including party adviser Lim Kit Siang and secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, remained silent.
MCA Young Professionals Bureau chairman Datuk Chua Tee Yong urged the DAP to guarantee that the Opposition would never implement hudud and force the religious principles on to Malaysians.
“DAP cannot turn a blind eye and continue evading this issue.
“We must ensure Malaysia remains a country of freedom and equality,” he said in a statement adding that PAS’ intention to implement hudud was against the principle of democracy.
Chua added that the Opposition had not taken any conclusive action to prevent PAS’ implementation of the law despite numerous meetings.
“Is DAP merely keeping silent over this matter or is the Rocket unable to control PAS at all?” he asked.
