(The Star) – There is no performance-based criteria for teachers to be promoted in the recently announced time-based promotion which will affect teachers who are degree and diploma holders.

Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong said as long as a teacher went to school, performed his duties and completed the number of years stipulated, he would be entitled for the promotion.

“This will allow teachers to be promoted easily. Promotions will no longer be subject to availability,” Wee said after handing over a cheque for RM3,000 to the Parent-Teacher association of SJKC Hwa Lien at Pulau Ketam yesterday.

Under the time-based promotion, a degree holder will take about eight years to be promoted from grade DG31 to DG44 and from DG44 to DG48.

After attaining Grade DG48, teachers will have to be in service for another six years to be promoted to DG52 and a further three years to be promoted to DG54.

He said the ministry had not received any complaints on the new exercise.

At the ceremony yesterday, Wee celebrated Teachers Day with teachers and students from the island.
