Suit against Bersih organisers

UNHAPPY: 280 individuals demanding compensation, 100 volunteer lawyers analysing each complaint

(NST) – A TOTAL of 280 demands for compensation have been recorded in just two weeks against the organisers of Bersih 3.0 for losses incurred during the rally on April 28.

The Kuala Lumpur Petty Traders Action Council chairman Datuk Jamal Md Yunus said the council, with help of 100 volunteer lawyers are analysing each complaint before proceeding with legal action.

“After looking through every complaint received, we will proceed to file a lawsuit against the Bersih coalition as soon as possible,” he said.

Jamal added that many traders have came forward to complain about their thousands of ringgit losses during the past Bersih rallies (Bersih 1.0, Bersih 2.0 and Bersih 3.0)

“If there is any dissatisfaction about the government, the rakyat can express it through various peaceful means, and not create chaos and endanger the safety of the public.

“Many businessmen and also taxi drivers are angered by the event which had caused enormous monetary losses and ruined their business on that day.”

Jamal, who is also the chairman of Bersih4.0, was met during a gotong-royong organised by the coalition at an orphanage in Sungai Buloh yesterday.

“Our coalition has undertaken charity works to show youngsters that their time and energy should not be wasted on events which are harmful and disrupt public order.

“We want youngsters to be involved in charitable works which will benefit them as well as others,” Jamal added.

The orphanage which is located in Bandar Baru Sungai Buloh, is home to 25 children aged between a month and 17 years old.

Over 100 volunteers from the council and the public joined the gotong-royong session to provide a conducive environment for the children.

Apart from cleaning the home, the volunteers also presented cash aid, clothes and groceries for the children.

Jamal said the act of doing charity must be instilled and encouraged amongst the younger generation so that they do not get involved in negative activities.
