Selangor tops unregistered voters list
(Bernama) – Selangor has the highest number of eligible voters who have not registered with the Election Commission (EC), with the figure reaching 600,000 from the total two million eligible voters in the state.
EC deputy chairman, Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar said there were 3.65 million Malaysians nationwide who had yet to register as voters, from the total number of 16.5 million eligible to vote.
“The problem of not registering as voters although eligible to do so, does not only happen in Selangor but also in other states like Johor, Perak and Kelantan, as well as Kuala Lumpur.
“However, I am impressed with Terengganu which has only about 46,000 eligible voters who have yet to register with the EC,” he said after a briefing on the coming general election for Terengganu election managers and assistant managers, here, today.
Wan Ahmad said the second briefing was to remind the election workers on the new regulations to be applied in the coming general election, such as the use of indelible ink, EC stamp on the ballot papers, early voting and postal voting.
He also disclosed the number of eligible voters in other states who have yet to register, such as almost 500,000 in Johor, 200,000 in Kelantan and 350,000 in Kuala Lumpur.
“To date, we have recorded nearly 13 million registered voters nationwide and we hope the others eligible to vote, would register themselves fast so that they can carry out their responsibility for the nation.”
He said of the 13 million voters, nearly two million would be new voters voting for the first time, with 35 per cent estimated to be aged 35 and below.
Wan Ahmad also reminded those who had voted before to check the electoral roll, made available since June 1, to avoid any problems later on.
For Terengganu, 611,583 registered voters are eligible to vote based on the electoral roll this year if the coming general election is held soon, with 100,000 of them being new voters.
“We will open 355 polling centres and 1,112 polling stations in Terengganu,” said Wan Ahmad.
Terengganu has 32 state seats and eight parliamentary seats.
