Nazri: 13 measures in place to improve electoral process

(The Star) – The Government has put in place 13 measures to improve the electoral process based on the recommendations made by the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) on electoral reform.

One of these is to improve the seating positions in voting stations to ensure transparency and confidentiality in casting votes, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz.

“The Election Commission (EC) has also continuously cleaned up the electoral roll to ensure it is updated and credible,” he said in a written reply to Anthony Loke Siew Fook (DAP – Rasah) in Parliament Wednesday.

Nazri said the EC was also working closely with government agencies, including the National Registration Department, police, army and Foreign Ministry, to register voters.

Other measures also include abolishing the objection procedure on the nomination day and offering postal voting to members of the media.

At the Parliament lobby, Loke told reporters that there was a need for more commitment from the EC on reforming the electoral process as there was no word about enabling overseas voting.

“In the PSC report tabled on April 2, we recommended that plans for overseas voting should be ready within three months. More than two months have passed but there is still no word on it,” he said, adding that such a move required detailed planning.
