Mass Rapid Transit awards RM13.8bil jobs in 31 packages
(The Star) – Mass Rapid Transit Corp Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) has awarded 31 out of the total 85 Klang Valley MRT packages for Line 1 to date, valued at RM13.83bil.
MRT Corp director of strategic communications and PR Amir Mahmood Razak said: “23 contracts are currently being evaluated, while the remaining 31, we have yet to issue tenders for.”
He added that the total 85 packages for line 1 would be awarded by December this year. Line 1, which is the Sungai Buloh-Kajang (SBK) line is made up of two phases. The first of is from Sungai Buloh to Semantan, and the second coming from the south of the Klang Valley from Kajang to Taman Maluri. Amir expects the first phase to be operational by December 2016, and the second phase by June 2017.
Meanwhile, Sunway Construction Sdn Bhd (Sunway Construction) has commenced work on the MRT Viaduct work package (V4) for the SBK line. Sunway Construction managing director of construction division Kwan Foh-Kwai said the preparations for V4 had commenced as of June 18. Sunway Construction was awarded package V4 worth RM1.17bil, for works between Section 17 in Petaling Jaya and the Semantan Portal.
Amir said: “Sunway Construction Sdn Bhd will be entrusted with the task of constructing a 6.6km long viaduct for the SBK line. Three stations will sit along this segment of the line, namely Section 16, Pusat Bandar Damansara and Semantan, with a provisional station at Bukit Kiara.”
Kwan said Sunway Construction prioritised public and environmental safety.
The company will take measures to minimise inconveniences that may arise to the public travelling along those areas.
“In order to minimise disruption and to maintain continued serenity in the neighbourhood, a comprehensive Traffic Management Plan with a 24-hour hotline and 24-hour Emergency Response Team will be enforced,” Amir said.
He added MRT Corp will also ensure the implementation of a comprehensive Environmental Management Plan by Sunway Construction to mitigate potential environmental impacts such as dust, noise and vibration.
Kwan said, “Along with the other contractors, we want our standard to match international standards in terms of safety and performance, with the likes of the London Tube and the Singapore MRT.”
V4 is one of the largest viaduct work packages out of the eight viaduct packages offered by MRT Corp. So far, five have been awarded to IJM Corp Bhd, Ahmad Zaki Resources Bhd, Syarikat Muhibbah Perniagaan & Pembinaan Sdn Bhd, and MTD Construction Sdn Bhd.
In regards to the supply of rolling stock for the SBK line, MRT Corp recently announced it had received three bids for an RM1.6bil to supply trains. Changchun Railways Vehicles Company, CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co Ltd, both from China will compete with Siemens SMH Rail Consortium of Germany to supply the rolling stock for the SBK line. Amir said the RM1.6bil tender will be awarded to one of the bids by the end of July.
Meanwhile, Singapore Technologies Electronics Ltd from Singapore and Faiveley Transport Far East Ltd from France had submitted bids for the platform screen doors. MRT Corp will announce the winner of the award in August.
