MCA tells DAP not to protect Anwar
The party says that DAP is shielding Anwar Ibrahim over accusations that the Opposition Leader has amassed RM3 billion in various accounts
(FMT) – MCA has asked Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim to come clean on accusations that he owns 20 master accounts worth RM3 billion.
“If he is not involved, then the PKR de facto leader should lodge a police report and come clean on the matter,” said MCA organising secretary Tee Siew Kiong.
He added that PKR’s ally, DAP, should also voice out against Anwar on the matter.
“DAP must persuade Anwar to be accountable to the rakyat. DAP cannot remain silent and shield its leaders.
“Had a BN leader be similarly accused of amassing such funds, DAP will instantly criticise BN and take a holier-than-thou stand against corruption.
“But now the situation has reversed. Since this allegation involves DAP’s ally, the Rocket opts to turn a blind eye. This is a case of double standard,” said Tee.
Tee said that irrespective of political affiliation, when there is suspicion of graft, DAP can no longer play favourite if the suspicion falls on one’s own member.
“The Rocket should not feign apathy or ignorance on this issue.”
The state assemblyman for Pulai Sebatang also said that the Inland Revenue Board and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) should start an investigation into the sources of Anwar’s purported wealth as the amount mentioned is not small.
Controversy over the 13-year-old case erupted after Ummi Hafilda Ali, the sister of PKR deputy president Azmin Ali, recently spoke about the anti-corruption agency’s probe into a statutory declaration that former Bank Negara Malaysia assistant governor Abdul Murad Khalid made on May 30, 1999.
In that SD, Murad claimed that Anwar had amassed RM3 billion during his tenure as deputy prime minister and finance minister. He also alleged that Anwar’s cronies had set up “master accounts” from which financial contributions could be made for Anwar’s interests.
It was reported that Murad subsequently retracted the SD. The MACC has also reportedly reopened investigations on the matter based on “new evidence”.
