Don’t be arrogant, remember history, Azhar tells Guan Eng

(Bernama) – Penang Umno today reminded Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng not to be arrogant and conceited as history has shown that DAP has experienced defeat in several past general elections.

State Umno liaison secretary Datuk Azhar Ibrahim said in the 1990 and 1995 elections, DAP only won one state seat in Penang.

“He (Lim) should not be so swollen-headed over the political tsunami in 2008, including defeating the Barisan Nasional (BN) in Penang as history shows that DAP only won one seat in 1990 after winning more than 15 before that.

“Lim should not be so arrogant as to say he would ensure that BN would get zero seats, as BN has its own strengths and we will defend our seats in the coming general election,” he said, here.

Azhar, who is Penaga assemblyman, also said that former prime minister and Kepala Batas Umno division chief Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had submitted the list of candidates to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak for the Penaga seat.

“It’s up to the prime minister to choose a winnable candidate for the constituency but the names of the potential candidates submitted are all winnable.

“I have gone through five general elections where the PAS candidate has never won in Penaga and I am confident BN will be able to retain the seat,” he said.

Azhar, who is also Penang opposition leader, announced recently that he would not be defending the Penaga seat which he has held for 22 years.

He said his time as an elected representative had come to an end and that a younger, qualified person should take over to continue serving the constituents.
