(The Star) – KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the next general election should be held this year as it is the most suitable time for it.

“I don’t think we should wait until next year. However, it depends on the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak), but I’ve told him that this year is the best time,” he said when opening the Batu Umno division meeting here yesterday.

Muhyiddin, who is also Umno deputy president said that since the fasting month was coming, some people had asked him whether it was possible for the general election to be held during Ramadan.

“My answer was: What’s wrong?” he added.

Muhyiddin also said he would meet with problematic Umno divisions during Ramadan to thrash out issues.

“All quarters from the top to the grassroots should work together to solve the problems amicably to ensure Barisan Nasional’s victory in the coming general election,” he said.

Muhyiddin, who is also FT Umno liaison chairman, also said each parliamentary and state seat contested was important for Barisan.

Muhyiddin also suggested that Barisan component party leaders identify problems faced by non-Malay voters for further action.

Later, closing the sixth annual Malaysian Student Leaders Summit, Muhyiddin said there was a need to review Moral Studies, not just the title but also the content.

Responding to a question from one of the participants, he said a series of education review dialogues was being held to obtain feedback on the education system.

“The blueprint will hopefully be released by August, after which it will be opened to public before being brought to the Cabinet,” he said.
