The Kuala Lumpur City Hall also says it is willing to hear appeals from property owners.

(FMT) – The Kuala Lumpur City Hall has reduced the proposed hike in assessment rates next year, by 1% and 4 %.

This follows increased opposition to the hike announced by the City Hall earlier this month.

Announcing the new rates at a press conference today, Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said  commercial properties owners will pay 10%, while residential property owners will be charged 4%.

Previously, the rates were fixed for 12% and 6% respectively. Rates will differ depending on the location of the properties.

“Properties within a 36-mile radius of Kuala Lumpur will have a different set of rates compared with that outside the radius,” he said.

He said rebates will be given to a special group of property owners, namely the disabled, retirees and owners staying on their own property.

“They can fill in the application forms that can be obtained from payment counters at City Hall offices and return them with supporting documents,” he said.

He said those living on their own property, instead of renting it out, will have to prove their claim.

“We will take it in good faith because as far as DBKL is concerned, if you cheat us, you are cheating God,” he said.

The Minister also hoped that the rates will not burden property owners.

“Because of this, after reading through some of the objections that we received, we decided to announce the new rates as well as related information,” said Tengku Adnan.
