(Bernama) – The Christmas celebration in Malaysia portrays its own uniqueness as it carries a clear message of how important the spirit of tolerance is to maintain unity and harmony in the country, says Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

The deputy prime minister said although there were less than 10 per cent Christians in this country, the Christmas festive atmosphere was prevalent everywhere.

“Although some states were hit by floods recently, I believe this does not dampen the spirit of the Christian community in celebrating Christmas and continuing the tradition of visiting each other in this multiracial and multireligious society of ours,” he said.

In his message in conjunction with Christmas, Muhyiddin said without mutual respect among its multireligious population, Malaysia might not be able to achieve harmony in inter-religious relations as enjoyed today.

“Religious freedom in this country is the result of tolerance and mutual respect practised by all communities in this country.

“With tolerance, the different communities are able to practise their religious teachings in a climate of peace and harmony,” he said.

Muhyiddin said it was the responsibility of every Malaysian citizen to preserve peace and unity, the pillars of building a developed Malaysia.

“Once again, I wish Merry Christmas to all Malaysians of the Christian faith. Let us all contribute to the prosperity of society in the country named Malaysia,” he said.
