(Bernama) – Police nabbed a local man with a homemade bomb in Taman Halaman, Ampang, Sunday, which is believed intended to be used on the eve of New Year.

Selangor Police deputy chief DCP Datuk Abd Rahim Jaafar (pic) said the man was spotted riding a motorcycle in a suspicious manner near the Taman Permai, Ampang traffic lights at 10.25am.

“The 46-year-old suspect, who worked in a shop selling items for prayers in Serdang, tried to flee upon seeing the police but was caught when his motorcycle rammed a car in Taman Halaman.

“An inspection of his sling bag found a home-made bomb from PVC pipe with a fuse and firecrackers.

“The suspect, who was intoxicated, said he learned to make the bomb on the internet,” he told reporters at the Selangor Contingent Police Headquarters, here, today.

Abd Rahim said investigation was ongoing to determine the target for the bomb. He said there was also a likelihood the bomb was meant to be used during the illegal assembly at Dataran Merdeka today.

“The bomb can cause serious injuries and even death if it exploded as the content is compacted with gun powder, nails and glasses,” he said.

Abd Rahim said a check found the suspect had nine criminal records including involving drugs and robbery.

He said the case was investigated under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957.
