PAS has demanded to know who paid for the Home Minister’s lavish birthday bash at a five-star hotel yesterday.

Its information chief Datuk Mahfuz Omar said Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi should explain who paid for the bill, especially now that Putrajaya is cutting back on subsidies and telling everyone to live prudently.

“I am shocked to read the news and it raises questions as to where the money came from to fund the celebration,” he told a press conference at the party’s headquarters today.

Mahfuz questioned the need for Ahmad Zahid to hold a lavish function when the minister could have hosted a house party with noodles, pulut kuning and cakes like any other Malaysian.

“Although it is a birthday celebration with his grandchild, why can’t he just have a celebration with his family at home and feast on noodles, pulut kuning and cakes? That, I feel, would have been sufficient,” he added.

The Pokok Sena MP was responding to The Malaysian Insider’s report today on Ahmad Zahid’s “lavish” birthday bash at a five-star hotel which his guests claimed was a New Year’s party.

Attended by some 1,000 guests, the party allegedly racked up a bill of RM120,000, according to the spokesman of the hotel where the event was held.
