(The Star) – Politicians across the divide took to Twitter to voice their stand on Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Dr Anwar Ibrahim contesting the Kajang state seat in the upcoming by-election.

To Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, the entire episode is a joke.

“Might as well crown yourself Sultan of Melaka while you’re at it,” said the Youth and Sports Minister in a tweet Tuesday that mentioned the PKR de facto leader, along with a #SayaMensi hashtag.

In a subsequent post, he attached a screen grab of Gombak MP Azmin Ali’s tweet of “Zaman kegilaan” (Mad season) on Jan 26, commenting: “Only now do I understand the true meaning of this tweet.”

Gerakan National Youth Chief Tan Keng Liang referred to previous exits paving the path for Anwar: “In 2008, his wife resign to allow him contest Permatang Pauh. In 2014, another fella resign to allow him contest Kajang. Is PKR all about him?”

He went on to query what would have happened if Anwar won the Kajang state seat, only to be rejected by the Sultan of Selangor to fill the Mentri Besar seat: “Want to be backbencher?”

In a response to the results by the The Star Online poll asking readers who they’d like to see as Selangor Mentri Besar, Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan tweeted: “Khalid as no1 is understood. Rafizi no2 is surprising. Anwar no3 shocking but Azmin at no4 is rather embarrassing.”

DAP’s Taiping MP Nga Kor Ming said he believed PKR was going through some difficult moments: “Let us give them our understanding & hope 4 the best.”

PKR’s Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin live-tweeted from the press conference where Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim announced Anwar’s candidacy: “Focus #pakatan is to win the seat. Let’s do it!”

Former minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Zaid Ibrahim, said he was still unclear on the need for a by-election: Anwar better come up with something credible.”

In a Facebook post which was shared on Twitter, an admin for PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat’s official

Page offered up a poll: “For census’s sake, if you are voter in the Kajang state constituency, what will your choice be in the by-election?”

The options offered were to “A. Vote PKR (Pakatan Rakyat), B. Vote Barisan Nasional, or C. Boycott the election.”
