(Fz.com) – The suspension of the death penalty on murder convict Chandran Paskaran was due to the intervention of His Royal Highness the Sultan of Johor.

“About 11.15 pm yesterday we got a call from the Kajang Prison that the death penalty had been postponed and that they got an official letter from the Johor Sultan,” said Thamothar Paskaran, who is Chandran’s brother.

“Our family would like to extend our gratitude and appreciation to the Sultan for his timely intervention,” he told a press conference.

Chandran’s family members were with him until 8pm yesterday when he expressed his regret over the death of Muthuraman Krishnasamy.

His family members also expressed their regret over the death of Muthuraman who Chandran was charged for murdering.

“I regret the death that my son knowingly or unknowingly caused but as a mother I plead you to forgive him,” said Nagammal Doraisamy, Chandran’s mother.

The family members also expressed thier desire to meet with Muthuraman’s family soon.

Chandran’s family thanked Hindraf, the United Nations and Amnesty International for all their efforts.

Hindraf meanwhile is taking this incident as a lesson to move towards campaigning towards the abolishment of the death penalty.

“Every soul has to be given a second chance and the opportunity to repent, and at the same time we also believe that the right of the victim and their family in search for justice has to be balanced,” said Hindraf National Secretary Ramesh Periasamy.

The family members of Chandran had a meeting with Hindraf chairman P. Waythamoorty before the press conference. He however was not present during the event.
