Anwar to run for president, confirms PKR secretary general
(TMI) – PKR secretary general Datuk Saifudin Nasution Ismail has confirmed that its de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (pic) will be running for the post of president in the party polls which start on April 25.
“Yes, Anwar will run for that post,” Saifuddin told The Malaysian Insider, elaborating on Anwar’s previous indication that he would contest the presidential post, which is currently held by his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail.
In an interview with a news portal, Anwar said that his wife had told him she wanted to rest and pay more attention to their grandchildren rather than be involved in politics.
Prior to this, there was speculation that the party’s deputy president Mohamad Azmin Ali would contest the post against Wan Azizah.
However, now that Anwar has decided to run for president, Azmin will face his friend if he is still interested in going for the seat.
The Malaysian Insider also understands that a PKR senior leader will challenge Azmin for the deputy president’s post in the party election.
PKR Election Committee chairman Datuk Johari Abdul announced that the nomination day for the central committee would be on March 29.
At the branch level, nominations will be held according to zones, beginning from April 4 to 13.
“The full results of the new line-up of PKR leadership will be revealed at the latest on May 13 after the nationwide voting ends on May 11,” he said in a press conference today.
