Anwar jailed five years, allowed stay of sentencing

Anwar Ibrahim

(The Star) – Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was sentenced to five years jail by the Court of Appeal for sodomising his aide in 2008.

The three-man bench led by Justice Balia Yusof Wahi granted him a stay of execution of the sentence with a bail of RM10,000 in one surety.

The court allowed Anwar to post bail by 11am on Monday.

In a unanimous decision, the panel allowed the prosecution’s appeal against a 2012 High Court decision that acquitted Anwar of the charge.

Justice Balia held that the trial judge had erred in his finding that the integrity of the samples had been compromised.
