Kajang by-election: Good beginning for MCA’s rebranding, says Ahmad Zahid
(The Star) – The result of the Kajang by-election, which showed an increase in the support of Chinese voters for Barisan Nasional, is proof of a good start to the re-branding process of MCA under its new leadership, Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.
He said although the result favoured the opposition, it showed the acceptance for and confidence in the Barisan by the voters.
“Firstly, Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun is a good candidate and secondly, the election machinery was mobilised well,” he told reporters after visiting the Seri Alam district police headquarters here.
Present was Johor police chief Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff.
PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail won the by-election for the state seat with a majority of 5,379 votes.
The result also showed an increase of seven per cent, to 25 per cent, in the support of Chinese voters for BN compared with the 13th general election results.
Ahmad Zahid, who is Home Minister, said Barisan would carry out a post-mortem on the by-election results to improve the people’s perception of Barisan.
