(TMI) – PKR secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail was barred from entering Sarawak when he arrived in Sibu this morning to assist the party’s campaign in the Balingian by-election.

Party communications director Fahmi Fadzil said Saifuddin (pic) was informed that he was not allowed to enter the state as soon as he landed.

“The officer on duty said the Sarawak chief minister’s office had issued instructions on March 22, preventing Saifuddin from entering the state,” said Fahmi in a statement, adding that Saifuddin was now waiting for a return flight to Kuala Lumpur.

Fahmi said today’s incident showed that former Sarawak chief minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud’s influence was still very much prevalent.

“PKR strongly opposes this undemocratic move by the Sarawak state government.

“It is clear that Taib’s influence is still very strong despite a new chief minister being appointed in the state.

“As long as it is prevalent, this influence will continue to deter the development of democracy in Sarawak.”
