Despite sodomy conviction and jail threat, Anwar still goes for PKR’s top post
Md Izwan, TMI
Despite his sodomy conviction and the possibility of being jailed, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is contesting the PKR’s top post.
The opposition leader’s representative, Low Chee Chong, the party’s deputy treasurer, filed his nomination papers today.
PKR is holding its nomination process for the various positions to be contested in the party elections.
The Permatang Pauh MP is currently PKR de facto leader, a position created for him after his release from prison in 2004.
His wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, has been party president since its formation in 1998.
Low said Anwar could not file his nomination form personally as he had just returned from Kota Baru after attending the party’s Reformasi 2.0 ceramah series last night.
However, the incumbent deputy president, Azmin Ali, will face two opponents – Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim and vice-president Chua Tian Chang.
Chua sent his nomination form in the morning while Azmin is expected to do so at 2pm today.
The nomination date for all top PKR posts is today while nominations for divisional posts will be from April 4 to April 13.
Voting will begin on April 25 and end on May 11, and the results announced either on May 12 or May 13.
