(The Star) – PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has nominated himself for the president’s post in the upcoming party polls.

Anwar was not present to file in his nomination papers but was instead represented by his seconder, PKR vice treasurer-general Low Chee Chong, at 11am Saturday.

Asked if Anwar’s conviction for sodomy could get in the way of the Opposition leader holding any post in the party, Low said: “His conviction is still under appeal and if it is upheld in the Federal Court, only then he will not be able to hold any post.”

Anwar’s proposer was Dr Syed Husin Ali, a former PKR deputy president.

Incumbent party president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail is expected to make way for her husband Anwar, following his decision to contest the post.

PKR recently amended its election rules to ensure clean and healthy party polls in May.

Individuals can now nominate themselves instead of relying on proposals from the divisions.
