(TMI) – DAP leaders today strongly denied a claim made by PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang that the Islamist party’s plan to implement capital punishments under Shariah, or hudud, in Kelantan had been endorsed by the Pakatan Rakyat leadership council.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said DAP leaders would never have endorsed such a plan and urged Hadi to prove his claim if the report quoting him was true.

“If Hadi was correctly quoted, then he is wrong and should show proof to back his claim because DAP had never agreed to the implementation of hudud by PAS on Muslims in Kelantan before or after PR was established in 2008.

“This is the first time that I have heard that DAP has agreed to PAS’s implementation of hudud law on Muslims in Kelantan. DAP top leadership, whether Lim Kit Siang or the late Karpal would never have agreed because it is unconstitutional,” Lim said in a statement, referring to the late DAP chairman Karpal Singh.

Hadi was reported as saying that PR’s top council had given its blessings to PAS’s plan to implement hudud laws in Kelantan.

“We have talked about this being the right of PAS leaders. We had issued a joint statement involving Pakatan Rakyat leaders that PAS’s right should be respected because this agenda came before Pakatan Rakyat existed,” news channel Astro Awani quoted him as saying.
