DAP candidate Ramkarpal Singh Deo, worried about a low turnout and the prospect of not matching his father’s majority, is urging those outstation to return home to vote in the Bukit Gelugor by-election.
Ramkarpal is confident of securing 80% of the votes but remains wary about a low-voter turnout that can dampen his chances of winning big.
In the 2013 general election, the turnout was almost 86%.
This time, Ramkarpal said he would be contended with a 75% to 80% turnout as it would give the big win he desired.
The DAP team has launched an aggressive campaign to woo voters on polling day this Sunday.
Ramkarpal said he was worried about not matching or better his father, the late Karpal Singh’s, stunning win in the parliamentary constituency in 2013 general election.
“We are also wooing voters staying outside Penang to return home to vote. Low-voter turnout remains among our major concern,” Ramkarpal told newsmen during his campaign trail today.
The late Karpal polled 55,839 votes to score a majority victory of 41,778 votes against Barisan Nasional candidate Teh Beng Yeam, who garnered 14,061 votes.
