True Valor
Tay Tian Yan, Sin Chew Daily
DURING THE ELECTORAL campaign, some have gone a little too far as to compare the sexual inclinations of candidates.
I would suggest these people to take a look at how Malaysia’s Thomas Cup squad has performed in order to understand how senseless they actually are.
Inside and outside the state assembly building, curses of “celaka” were tossed, and this sparked aggressive protestors storming the state legislative assembly while others vowed to burn down rival party’s headquarters.
They should feel ashamed of themselves if they think what they have done are acts of valor. They should take cue from the fighting spirit and resolution of our badminton players for a better definition of gallantry instead of wasting their energy at the wrong places.
Perhaps the people considered ignorant and senseless are only the minority, but these people have wrestled the public arena to put on their jokers’ show. While commanding excellent exposure among the public, they have nevertheless also created the shock factor.
They thought they were the embodiment of courage and righteousness, but in actual fact they were just trying to play hero and having righteousness completely distorted. Such are the acts the weak and incompetent adopt in an attempt to conceal their own deficiencies.
These are the people that have turned an otherwise pretty country into a chaos of heightened ethnic sentiments.
Unfortunately, ethnic and partisan thinking has prevailed over nationalism. The spectators are taking their own sides as they join in the squabble, sending the emotions to near boiling temperatures.
Meanwhile, politicians themselves have their own interests to be taken into consideration, acting indifferent or hypocritical, while the authorities have failed to act resolutely.
The biggest problem with this country is that our political arena is impregnated with people who are both ignorant and senseless and who take delight in putting up their seditious tricks in an overly enthusiastic display of their distorted courage and righteousness while creating illusionary heroism.
Re-establishment of the right concept of nationalism and promotion of positive national values appear to be too distant and tough, even unfathomable to many.
Fortunately Thomas Cup has come in to provide a new stage to divert public attention, allowing us to see what is meant by true bravery, solidarity and nationalism.
