DAP Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen has pledged to appoint a Dayak Chief Minister if Pakatan Rakyat comes into power in the next state election slated to be held in 2016 or earlier.
He said that DAP will implement the “gentlemen’s agreement” made during the formation of Malaysia, where it was agreed that if the Sarawak Governor is a Malay Muslim, then the Chief Minister would be a Dayak.
He made the announcement at the Gawai Dayak open house here on Sunday.
“There was an understanding during the formation of Malaysia and the independence of Sarawak, that if the Governor was a Malay, then the Chief Minister would be a Dayak.
“However, over the years this understanding has been neglected, totally forgotten and brushed aside by BN,” he said.
Commenting on the appointment of Adenan Satem as the new chief minister following Taib Mahmud’s resignation in March, Chong said that DAP had passed a resolution for a Dayak chief minister.
