SSS athletes shine in Games

THE Selangor swimming team, represented by Perangsang Selangor’s Selangor Sports Stimulus (SSS) swimmers, achieved excellent results by winning seven out of the team’s nine gold medals in the Perlis Malaysia Games recently.

Chan Jie, 19, from Subang, Selangor emerged as the best swimmer for the team, clinching three gold medals and setting meet records in the 50m men’s butterfly (25.13s) and 100m butterfly (55.04s) as well as the 4x100m medley.

In addition, Chan Jie with Lim Tsiu Khoon, 17, bagged the 4x100m freestyle gold with a record-breaking time of 3:30.39s.

In the women’s category, Caroline Chan, 19, won the gold medal in the 50m backstroke and 4x100m medley together with Phee Jinq En, 17, and Maryann Kok, 18.

Maryann was also part of the quartet who won the 4x100m freestyle event.

SSS swimmers also took home six silver and nine bronze medals.

SSS cyclist Mohd Izdihilmi Samsuddin won a gold and silver medal in the men’s highway team and team time trial. Mohd Fitri Sharil also won the bronze medal in the team time trial.

SSS badminton players Crysvia Lim and Birentha A. Karupathevan were part of the team who won bronze while Payee Lim won the bronze medal in the mixed doubles.

The SSS is a sports development programme under the corporate social responsibility initiative of Perangsang Selangor, involving football, swimming, cycling, badminton and bowling.

Perangsang Selangor has allocated RM1.8 million to implement SSS programmes.

The programme consists of the talent sports camp, which encompasses selection, training and development of young athletes to be absorbed into the Perangsang Selangor Elite Team to compete in local and international tournaments; and sponsorship of football tournaments to identify new talents to represent Selangor and Malaysia.

To date, Perangsang Selangor has spent RM169,353 for bowling, RM107,340 for badminton, RM99,630 for football, RM95,050 for swimming and RM82,400 for cycling.
