PAS MP Khalid Samad today offered a conditional apology to the Sultan of Selangor, saying that he was unclear how he had offended the ruler when he asked for the executive powers of the Selangor religious council MAIS to be checked.
PAS federal lawmaker Khalid Samad today said he was apologising to the Sultan of Selangor ‘if’ he had done anything to mislead the state ruler into believing that he had challenged his powers.
“I’m apologising if there were any things which I did which led the sultan to believe that was my intention (to challenge his powers),” Khalid told reporters at a press conference today.
When asked if this meant he was only offering the state ruler a conditional apology, Khalid said it is because he did not understand what he did wrong.
“Because I don’t understand where I was supposed to have challenged his powers.
“So, in that context, it became something like a conditional apology.
“In the event that I get to see him and he clarifies what I have done… and it’s proven, I will apologise,” said the Shah Alam MP.
But Khalid said he was sticking to his stance that the Selangor state government should review the executive powers of MAIS.
He clarified that his intent was not to challenge the Sultan’s powers, but to protect the royal institution from any criticism should Mais err in the execution of its duties.
