PAS denies agreeing to replace Khalid with Wan Azizah

ISKANDAR-ABDUL-SAMAD

(The Star) – PAS has said that it never agreed to having Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as the new Selangor Mentri Besar.

Selangor PAS commissioner Iskandar Samad said the party has yet to achieve consensus on the matter, and maintained that he shares the same stand as PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang.

Hadi is reportedly in favour of Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim remain the state’s Mentri Besar until the end of the term.

“Selangor PAS never agreed to replace Khalid with Wan Azizah…we have yet to decide on this,” Iskandar told The Star Online via a text message.

The Chempaka assemblyman also appeared evasive when asked if  the party was in favour of Bukit Antarabangsa assemblyman Azmin Ali, who is also PKR deputy president instead.

“We share the same stand as the PAS president. That is all I can say now. We are instructed not to issue statements on this,” he said.

The political drama in Selangor has dragged on for months, since the ‘Kajang move’ was engineered as part of a strategy to remove Khalid from the mentri besar post.

Dr Wan Azizah came into the picture after she won the Kajang by-election and was tipped to be next MB.

Some party sources have claimed that Azmin received strong backing from both PAS and DAP in the state, but this was later disputed by both parties.

However, PKR de-facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is believed more keen on having his wife Azizah take over the hot seat.

Khalid is under intense pressure to give up his post following a barrage of criticism thrown at him by his party colleagues  over his handling of various issues in the state.

The Port Klang assemblyman is also losing to Azmin in the ongoing PKR deputy presidency race, a sign many see as dwindling support from the grassroots.

Khalid however remained steadfast, saying he would stay in the office at least until the end of the term to fullfill his promises to the people.

PKR supreme council is expected to deliver its decision on who will take over from Khalid on Monday night.
