(The Star) – While Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim respects the party’s decision that he be replaced by Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, the Mentri Besar stressed that “proper steps” must be taken according to the state’s constitution.

Khalid said he will continue to lead the state until official procedures to unseat him were followed.

He acknowledged the candidacy of Dr Wan Azizah, the PKR president, as his potential replacement.

“I respect the political decision of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) in fielding party president Datin Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as the candidate for mentri besar.

“However, I strictly stand by the state constitution which stipulates specific procedures for the appointment or replacement of the Mentri Besar.

“I believe that those involved in this effort must go through those processes before achieving their end goals,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.

“Until the necessary processes take place, I will continue to carry out my duties as Mentri Besar with full responsibility, diligence and trustworthiness that was entrusted to me by the people of Selangor,” said Khalid.

Khalid urged the people not to heed the controversial and provocative news on the appointment, stressing that the state has a set of procedures under the constitution.

He added that the mentri besar dispute has no adverse effect on the state’s administration.

On Monday, PKR officially announced Dr Wan Azizah’s candidature for Mentri Besar.

PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil said details of the mentri besar’s position will be discussed and revealed after the Pakatan Rakyat presidential council meeting on Wednesday.

Khalid is expected to accompany the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, to a buka puasa function in Kuang, Rawang later Tuesday.
