Pakatan rule at stake in Selangor

Lau-Weng-San

(The Sun Daily) – Pakatan Rakyat’s position in Selangor is at stake following PAS support for Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim to retain the post, a DAP assemblyman said today.

Lau Weng San, the representative for Kampung Tunku, added the worst case scenario is that that PAS will not only be be wiped out in a snap election, but PKR and DAP will also lose badly if there is no solution to the issue.

His comment comes in the wake of a similar statement by DAP MP for Petaling Jaya Utara, Tony Pua, today.

However, Lau believed that PAS should be able to resolve this internal issue.

He was speaking to reporters after handing over a cheque for RM10,000 from the state government to SJKC Sungai Way at JKKK Seri Setia Hall, today.

On reports that PAS research centre operations director Dr Mohd Zuhdi Marzuki had discussed the possibility of the party working with Umno in Selangor while retaining Khalid as MB, Lau said: “Dr Zuhdi should clarify what he had said and apologise for issuing such a statement that may hurt the feelings of PR’s non-Malay supporters.”

Meanwhile, DAP Selangor chairman Tony Pua said PR will face significant losses should a snap election be called in Selangor especially with PAS at risk of being annihilated and Umno likely to regain control of the nation’s richest state.

He said it is possible for PAS to lose all its seats in the state assembly, while PKR and DAP will be left with 10 and 13 seats respectively.

“It will be very unlikely for PR, if the coalition still exists in the snap election to retain power in the state. The biggest winner will be Umno, returning with up to 30 seats in the state assembly,” Pua, who is also Petaling Jaya Utara MP, said in a statement today.

He said this is due to a massive loss in confidence in the Opposition coalition by the public as shown in independent surveys and PR’s own on the ground feedback.

Meanwhile, the Coalition for Free and Fair Elections (Bersih 2.0) slammed PAS for considering delineating constituency boundaries according to race and religion.

In a statement issued by the steering committee, Bersih 2.0 reminded PAS of their 13th General Election slogan of “PAS for all”, and said that they have betrayed the ideals put forth.

“Even in merely entertaining race-based delineation, PAS has betrayed this ideal; the party appears to have forgotten the interest of the voters who chose them,” Bersih 2.0 said.

The NGO added that the move will also be unconstitutional and urged all political parties to stop dividing Malaysians for their own political agenda.
