(The Star) – All MCA division heads in Negri Sembilan have been told to wait for the state government to endorse the list of local councillors and village heads reserved for the party before announcing them.

MCA deputy president and acting state chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic) said the appointment of councillors and ketua kampung came under the jurisdiction of the Mentri Besar and this should be respected.

“We can recommend the names but it is the state government and the MB who will have the final say on this,” he told reporters after chairing the state MCA meeting.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan had prior to this said that there was a delay in the naming of councillors and ketua kampung as there was a screening process that had to be carried out.

These included the need to check the status of the recommended candidates with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, the Insolvency Department and police.

Dr Wee said the delay was unprecedented as the previous MCA councillors and village heads had resigned from their positions after the party decided not to accept any government post after the general election last year.

Dr Wee, who said that the state MCA had submitted its recommendations to the state government in May, also reminded MCA members in the state not to lobby for these positions.

“I have been told that some individuals have been getting recommendations from certain wakil rakyat to be appointed. I would like to stress here that only the MCA can recommend appointments,” he said.

Dr Wee, who is also Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, said he had discussed the matter with Mohamad and hoped that the names could be announced soon.

This, he said, was to allow the commencement of 30 government-sponsored projects in several Chinese new villages here.

“The Federal Government has allocated RM2.29mil for these projects in the first half of this year but we need to form the Village Development and Security Committees in these new villages before the projects can start,” he said.
