Penang CM’s home targeted with Molotov cocktail
(The Star) – A Molotov cocktail was thrown into Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s residence in a suspected arson attack just before midnight yesterday.
In the incident, an unidentified motorcyclist is believed to have stopped in front of the house before he threw the homemade incendiary device into the Penang lawmaker’s private home at Pinhorn Road here.
Penang police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said the Molotov cocktail was hurled into the porch section of Lim’s house, narrowly missing the cars parked there.
The man then immediately rode off after committing the deed at about 11.45pm last night, he said.
Lim and his family were not home during the attack as they were were attending the Merdeka Eve celebration at the Esplanade.
“The security guard at the house was at the back portion of the house when the incident happened so he did not see the assailant,” Abdul Rahim said.
He said the bottle containing kerosene had exploded upon impact but did not damage anything within the property.
“We have obtained the CCTV recording and we will be reviewing it to identify the assailant,” he added.
The police are investigating the case under Section 435 of the Penal Code for committing mischief by fire.
Lim, who rushed home after receiving the information, is yet to issue a statement on the incident and is expected to call a press conference on it tomorrow.
