(MMO) – Only the law can prove whether the unit is illegal, not Barisan Nasional (BN).

PAS lawyers have indicated their readiness to defend the party’s charity corps Unit Amal, should they face legal charges following a warning from Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi of a possible police crackdown.

In a report on the party’s online mouthpiece Harakah Daily, the secretary of PAS’s law and human rights bureau Abang Ahmad Kerdee Abang Masagus insisted that only the law can prove whether the unit is illegal, not Barisan Nasional (BN).

“Zahid was hasty for making a punitive remark before any decision from the court,” said Abang Ahmad, who is also a PAS central committee member.

“For the Unit Amal to be arrested or charged, it is up for the courts to decide whether they are guilty or not under the law. Zahid should not be the decider of their guilt.”

Zahid — whose ministry oversees homeland security — said yesterday he was certain the police will crack down on the PAS charity unit as he considers the group’s status as no different from that of the Penang volunteer patrol unit (PPS), which the police have declared illegal.
