PAS’s powerful Muslim scholars wing wants the party to accept the Selangor menteri besar’s post if that is the choice of the state ruler, a move which shows that the party’s rifts over the issue are likely to get worse.

The ulama wing, who are influential in endorsing policy and charting the party’s direction, have put the party on the path where it could clash with its Pakatan Rakyat ally PKR, which was promised the post before.

However, PAS Dewan Ulama acting deputy chief Datuk Mahfodz Mohamed also qualified the wing’s call by urging the party to accept the Selangor Sultan’s choice if it is a menteri besar from PKR.

Mahfodz’s reason in wanting the party to accept the menteri besar’s post was that it would risk angering the sultan if it rejected the ruler’s decision to appoint a PAS menteri besar.

Mahfodz’s call comes on the back of intense debate in the party over whether to accept the Selangor Menteri Besar’s post.

“If the menteri besar is from PKR we should accept. If the menteri besar is from PAS we should also accept.

“We already have one enemy, Umno. We should not add another enemy from the palace.”

PAS’s elected central committee had decided to reject the post if it was given to the party.

But this decision was not followed through by president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang who announced that PAS would accept any decision made by the sultan including if the ruler chose a PAS menteri besar.
