(The Star) – Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (pic) has backed Selangor Mentri Besar Azmin Ali and expressed his hope that the state assembly will give the latter its full support.

According to an online portal report, the former Prime Minister told reporters at an event in Shah Slam on Sunday that support for Azmin would mean a vote of no confidence could be avoided and that the state did not have to look for another mentri besar.

On the reduction of PAS’ state exco posts from four to three, Dr Mahathir said it was Azmin’s right to do so.

“He can do what he feels is appropriate. It is not necessary for him to keep four excos just because the previous administration did so,” he is reported to have said.

Dr Mahathir had last week said that anyone would make a better leader over PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar was a candidate to replace Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim as Selangor Mentri Besar in the so-called “Kajang Move” but was denied the opportunity when the Court of Appeal found him guilty of sodomy, overturning a High Court decision.
