UM under lockdown, student council infuriated
PMUM condemns UM authorities of deliberately defaming Anwar’s talk on campus premises tomorrow.
(Free Malaysia Today) – Universiti Malaya’s Student Council (PMUM) is enraged at the deliberate attempt by UM’s Student’s Affairs Division (HEP) to defame the talk by opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim slated to be held at the university’s premises tomorrow at 9pm.
In a statement to the press, PMUM’s deputy secretary-general Leong Yu Sheng condemned the steps taken by the university to deliberately “defame” Anwar’s speaking engagement by describing it as a ploy to overthrow the government or “menguling kerajaan”.
Incensed that the police will be stationed at all exit and entry points of the campus, Leong likened the heavy security to that of a “curfew” and accused HEP of over-stepping their boundaries.
He said, “It is disappointing that the HEP had misuse(d) their authority to allow PDRM to take over UM, making UM under “Darurat” condition.”
Leong also implied the authorities were over-reacting to the talk and treating Anwar like a “terrorist”.
He said, “It seems like the alumni, Anwar Ibrahim that we invited is a terrorist with deadly weapons.”
Leong was also sorely disappointed that HEP refused to acknowledge PMUM’s “student autonomy” and reminded the management that the university did not only belong to them, but to the “students, academic staff and alumni” as well.
