Cops at Jakim, state religious depts soon
(Bernama) – Jamil Khir said the move could smoothen enforcement and prosecution of syariah criminal cases through the police personnel’s experience in handling crime cases.
The process of placing police personnel at the Malaysia Islamic Development Department (Jakim) and state religious departments is now in the final phase.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Jamil Khir Baharom said they were awaiting the appointments by the Public Service Department (PSD) for the deployment of the police personnel.
“We are at the final stage and it will be settled soon after obtaining the designations via PSD to place policemen in every state for the enforcement and prosecution of syariah cases,” he said.
He told this to reporters after opening the All-Malaysia Religious Enforcement Officers and Syariah Prosecutors Convention, here, today.
Also present was Malacca Islamic Religious Council deputy chairman Yaakub Md Amin.
Jamil Khir said the move could smoothen enforcement and prosecution of syariah criminal cases through the police personnel’s experience in handling crime cases.
In addition, Jamil Khir said the police personnel also understood the method of integrated enforcement with other enforcement agencies and could be mobilised at any time they were needed.
He said the police personnel involved would not be known as syariah police because it could confuse the people.
“The policemen will cooperate directly with the enforcement and prosecution divisions of Jakim and the state religious departments,” he said.
He also stressed that the enforcement by the police personnel would only involve offences committed by Muslims.
