Puteri Umno wants gender change prohibited

(FMT) – Umno women’s wing says gender change is not only prohibited in Islam, but also violates human nature regardless of race or religion.

The government has been urged to study a suitable mechanism to amend existing laws aimed at prohibiting individuals from changing their gender.

Bukit Katil Puteri Umno division chief Siti Aisyah Mahmood said problems related to identity disorder should not be placed under Syariah law.

“Gender change is not only prohibited in Islam, but also violates human nature regardless of race or religion,” she said when debating the motion on religion and social during the Puteri Umno assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) on Wednesday.

Siti Aisyah, who represents Melaka Puteri Umno, also said the number of religious enforcers should be increased and they should be given absolute power to arrest Malay youths who commit offences such as consuming liquor at entertainment centres and social events.

“This (addition in enforcers) will give youths with religious qualification the opportunity to obtain jobs and help overcome the problem of unemployment,” she said.

The government proposed setting up government-owned tahfiz classes, using the same concept as community colleges, to provide structured and coordinated religious education, she said.

To tackle social problems more effectively, Siti Aisyah said the community must go back to basics and refer to the al-Quran and sunnah as such problems stemmed from the lack of religious education.
