Pakatan Rakyat (PR) was fortunate that Selangor Umno was led by Datuk Seri Noh Omar during the height of the Menteri Besar imbroglio in the state this year, state DAP chairman Tony Pua said.

Pua said if elections had been called during the period, PR might have suffered a humiliating defeat.

“We were lucky that Noh was in charge of Selangor Umno and that the party was weak. Otherwise, Pakatan Rakyat might have suffered,” he told delegates at the state DAP Convention held at the Petaling Jaya Civic Centre today.

The convention was also attended by party secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.

“If Selangor Umno had been led by a smarter, more competent and efficient leader, Pakatan Rakyat might have lost the state due to the MB imbroglio,” Pua said.

He acknowledged that the goodwill and trust built up by Pakatan Rakyat over the past six years in Selangor had been eroded as a result of the menteri besar imbroglio.

Former Selangor menteri besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim was eventually succeeded by PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali.

However, Pua said throughout the Menteri Besar saga, DAP had given its unwavering support to PKR as a coalition partner.

“DAP did not take sides when Khalid refused to step down, the party continued to give PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail its undivided support.”

Pua told the delegates that they had to play their part to win back the trust and support of the people in Selangor following the MB saga.
