(Free Malaysia Today) – PAS caught DAP and PKR leaders by surprise with its decision to go ahead with a private member’s bill on the implementation of hudud in Kelantan, DAP Parliamentary Leader Lim Kit Siang said in a media statement today.

He said the Kelantan Menteri Besar’s announcement of a special state assembly session on December 29 to amend the Syariah Criminal Code Enactment II 1993 was done without any consultation with PKR and DAP.

The amendment of the enactment would be a prelude to the tabling of a private member’s bill in Parliament.

“There had been no prior hint or information whatsoever,” Lim said. “It caught PKR and DAP leaders, as well as the Pakatan Rakyat Leadership Council, by complete surprise.

“Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed with me that he is in the dark about the plan to hold a special state assembly sitting.”

Lim said PAS had breached the Pakatan Rakyat consensus that any new measures on hudud would first be discussed in the Leadership Council.

“This is not the way to restore public confidence in Pakatan Rakyat, which has been seriously shaken by recent developments, or to take full advantage of the latest political development where a former top civil servant has passed the judgement that Umno and Barisan Nasional are in their ‘death throes.’”
