PKR must support the PAS-led Kelantan state government’s bid to implement the Islamic criminal law, hudud, in the state, since its top leaders are Muslim, Selangor PAS said today.

Selangor PAS information chief Zaidy Abdul Talib said PKR should not follow DAP’s anti-hudud stance as the majority of DAP leaders were non-Muslim.

“We cannot force the non-Muslims. But for the Muslims, it is compulsory for us to accept it.

“We must believe in it, we have our faith. If we reject it, we are committing a sin.

“So from the perspective of being Muslims, PKR cannot reject it. They must support it,” he told reporters at an event at the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) in Gombak, Selangor, today.

PKR’s central committee will meet at 3pm today at the Selangor menteri besar’s official residence to decide on the party’s stance regarding hudud.

PKR de facto chief Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had said last Monday that the Kelantan government’s plan to table an amendment on hudud in its state assembly was problematic, as it had no powers to enforce the law in the state.

Kelantan is to hold a special sitting of its legislative assembly on December 29 to amend state Islamic enactments. Once passed, this will pave the way for PAS to table a private member’s bill in Parliament to implement the Muslim penal code in the state.

The bill will need a simple majority of 112 lawmakers supporting it in order for it to be passed and can be tabled once the Kelantan assembly passes the amendment to its Shariah Criminal Code Enactment II.

Zaidy said today PAS had championed hudud since the beginning, noting that it was in line with the party’s constitution to set up an Islamic government.

The Taman Templer state assemblyman said PAS members now had to educate the people, especially non-Muslims, on how hudud could be used to reduce crime.
