PKR divisions challenge council appointments

Mansor-Othman

The Penang PKR political bureau is unconstitutional and has no right to make the appointments, say division chiefs.

Seven PKR divisions in Penang are challenging the appointment of the party’s councillors for the two municipalities in the state, saying the decision was defective because it was made by an “unconstitutional” political bureau.

The leaders of the Permatang Pauh, Balik Pulau, Kepala Batas, Tasek Gelugor, Jelutong, Tanjung and Bagan divisions argue that under the PKR constitution, no state leadership can form a political bureau.

The Penang PKR Politicial Bureau is headed by Mansor Othman, who is the party’s state chief. The leaders of the seven divisions are seeking a meeting with him to resolve the issue.

Sources said Tanjung division chief Ng Chek Siang had submitted a letter on behalf of the seven divisions to Mansor, informing him of their objection to the appointments.

PKR appoints eight representatives as councillors in Majlis Perbandaran Pulau Pinang (MPPP) and nine in Majlis Perbandaran Seberang Perai ( MPSP).

Mansor formed the bureau when he became Penang PKR Chairman in 2010 and has continuously operated it despite objections from some division leaders.

The leaders of the seven divisions  argue that all bureau decisions are null and void, including the appointment of the councillors.

Sources said these divisions might bring up the matter with the Registrar of Societies if the PKR leadership continued to ignore the issue.
